eagle eye |
untitled macro |
This is a shot of one of my childrens' friends at the beach. Her long hair happened to blow across her face, creating a nice image. Originally a color shot, I converted it to black and white and cropped out everything but her head. Good result I think.

This is a shot of a captive bald eagle (one of a pair of eagles) at Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina. The eagles' eyes remained glaring and highly focused at all times (or so it seemed), showing where phrases like "eagle eye" come from.

This is a macro shot of a flower. One of the interesting aspects is that, if you look closely, there is a baby grasshopper or cricket on the petal in the foreground. I didn't even notice it until someone on Flickr pointed it out.

clover lines |
A few of my first fireworks shots. I'm sure there are plenty of similar shots being uploaded tonight. These were set off a bit early due to approaching storms, so the background sky provides a bit more interest than the usual pitch black background.

A few of my first fireworks shots. I'm sure there are plenty of similar shots being uploaded tonight. These were set off a bit early due to approaching storms, so the background sky maybe provides a bit more interest than the usual pitch black background. The downside to the storms was raindrops on my lens (see note on the shot).

This is one of my first macros or close-ups from several weeks ago using a 10x filter on a 50mm prime lens. I'm uploading it for a macro contest with a "lines" theme. I think the clover stems, along with the blurred grass in the background create a lot of great lines moving through the image. The background also has a bit of an impressionist feel to it.

Japanese beetle munching on English daisy? |
I took this shot of a thoroughbred foal today along Old Frankfort Pike in Woodford County, Kentucky. He's standing close to his mother and peering at me through a black wood fence that's common here in Central Kentucky.

Another bubble from a couple of weeks ago at the beach with my kids. This one again reflects an image of the pool area, and the table (mirrored on the two sides of the bubble) forms eyes with the fence and the pool creating a smile. It's probably like clouds -- you can always see something if you try -- but it's again pretty cool.

This is a shot from late this afternoon in a neighbor's flower bed (Lexington, KY, USA). The flower is Not sure what beetle this is, but he made for a colorful contrast against the white and yellow flower. The yellow center was about 2-3 cm wide, and the beetle was probably about 1-2 cm long.
Update: I think maybe this is a Japanese beetle on an English daisy. Any other input would be great.

watchful bumblebee |
Branson Landing |
reaching for the light |
There were several bumblebees and honeybees patiently letting me shoot them today on these white coneflowers. This shot is one of the more interesting ones because the bee's head is turned outward, rather than buried in the cone. Looks as though he's considering his next target.

A shot last night of the synchronized light and water display at Branson Landing in Branson, Missouri. The fog from the cold lake water helped create a nice scene in combination with the show.

This is a shot I took today walking along a nature trail in Missouri in hundred degree heat. When a cloud partly shielded the sun, this dead and very dry looking tree oddly seemed to be reaching for the sky and the rays of sunlight in the bottom right corner of the scene.

butterfly profile (Heliconius timareta?) |

untitled |
A close-up of a butterfly from the side. The focus isn't quite as sharp as I'd like, but an interesting shot.
Update: I think this butterfly (which I shot in an indoor butterfly garden with a wide variety of species from around the world) is from the Heliconius genus of butterflies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heliconius). If anyone can help identify the particular species or otherwise provide any insight, I'd really appreciate it.
Update 2: Possibly Heliconius timareta from Ecuador and Peru? tolweb.org/Heliconius_timareta/72253

Shot of a small waterfall in the Ozarks in southern Missouri. My first stab at a long exposure shot of flowing water. This one was eight seconds. As dusk wore on and it got darker, my exposure times increased. Biggest take-home point is to bring a flashlight next time, as I found it's not particularly easy to focus in the dark.

Another shot from underneath the bloom this morning at the University of Kentucky arboretum. This time I got both not only the blue sky and white cloud background, but also a nice silhouette from the backlit petals in the upper left corner.
